Income Tax Act 2007 section 19

Meaning of "dividend income"

Section 19 defines what counts as "dividend income" for the purposes of the Income Tax Acts.

  • Dividend income includes dividends and similar distributions from UK resident companies, as well as dividends from non-UK resident companies.
  • Stock dividends from UK resident companies and amounts released when a loan to a participator in a close company is written off also count as dividend income.
  • Certain foreign distributions that would be treated as dividends if the paying company were UK resident are included, even where they are not otherwise taxed as foreign dividends.
  • This definition applies across the whole of the Income Tax Acts, ensuring a consistent meaning wherever the term "dividend income" is used.
