Capital Allowances Act 2001 section 324

Net allowances

Section 324 defines how to calculate the net allowances figure used in balancing adjustment calculations under Chapter 7.

  • Net allowances are calculated as: (Initial Allowances + Writing-Down Allowances + Research and Development Allowances) minus Balancing Charges
  • Only writing-down allowances, research and development allowances, and balancing charges for chargeable periods ending on or before the date of the balancing event are included
  • The calculation brings together all the tax relief previously given on a particular item of qualifying expenditure and offsets any balancing charges already made
  • The resulting net allowances figure is used elsewhere in Chapter 7 to determine the correct balancing adjustment when a balancing event occurs
