Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 22ZA

Licences for vehicles for disabled persons: information

Section 22ZA governs how personal information held by government departments for social security or war pension purposes may be shared to support the processing of vehicle excise duty exemptions and reduced rates for disabled persons.

  • Certain personal information held by the Secretary of State, Northern Ireland departments, or their service providers for social security or war pension purposes may be shared for vehicle licensing functions relating to disabled persons.
  • The shareable information includes the name, date of birth, national insurance number, payment rates, and cessation details of recipients of personal independence payment (mobility component) or armed forces independence payment.
  • Information may only be shared if the relevant individual (or the person who originally provided the information) has given consent and has not withdrawn that consent.
  • Once shared, the information must only be used for vehicle licensing functions for disabled persons or related civil or criminal proceedings, and must not be passed on to anyone else unless they too would have been entitled to receive it directly.
