Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 9

Temporary vehicle licences

Section 9 deals with the power of the Secretary of State to issue short-term temporary vehicle licences instead of immediately granting the full-period licence applied for, and the fee that may be charged for this service.

  • When a vehicle licence application is made, the Secretary of State may issue a temporary licence for 14 days (or another prescribed period) instead of the full licence, and may issue further temporary licences as needed.
  • Issuing a temporary licence does not change the total amount of vehicle excise duty payable โ€” the full duty for the period applied for remains due.
  • An authorised agent (other than a Northern Ireland department) processing the application may charge the applicant a fee of ยฃ2.35 for issuing a temporary licence.
  • The Secretary of State has the power to change the ยฃ2.35 fee by regulations.
