Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 25

Charge on request for registration mark

Section 25 deals with the charges that may be imposed when a person requests that a particular registration mark (number plate) be transferred from one vehicle to another.

  • The Secretary of State may set charges through regulations for transferring a specific registration mark from one vehicle to another, whether the receiving vehicle is being registered for the first time or is already registered.
  • Regulations may require either or both vehicles involved in the transfer to be presented for physical inspection at a designated location.
  • A separate charge may be set for the inspection itself, and all or part of that inspection charge may be kept even if the registration mark transfer does not ultimately go ahead.
  • The charges do not need to reflect the actual cost of carrying out the transfer or arranging the inspection โ€” they can be set at whatever level the Secretary of State considers appropriate.
