Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 54

Single witness sufficient in certain Scottish proceedings

Section 54 deals with an exception to the normal Scottish legal requirement for corroborated evidence in certain vehicle excise offence prosecutions.

  • This section applies only to criminal proceedings in Scotland.
  • It covers offences of using or keeping an unlicensed vehicle, being the registered keeper of an unlicensed vehicle, and failing to exhibit a vehicle excise licence.
  • In these cases, a conviction may be secured on the evidence of a single witness, without the usual Scottish law requirement for corroboration.
  • This provision makes it easier for authorities to prosecute vehicle excise offences in Scotland, aligning more closely with the evidential standard in England and Wales.
