Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 section 61

Vehicle weights

Section 61 defines the key weight-related terms used throughout the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 for the purpose of determining vehicle excise duty on goods vehicles and trailers.

  • The "plated gross weight" of a goods vehicle or trailer is the maximum gross weight shown on its official plate or plating certificate, or for certain trailers without a Ministry plate, the maximum laden weight at which it may lawfully be used in Great Britain.
  • The "plated train weight" is the maximum gross weight for an articulated vehicle combination (the tractor unit plus any semi-trailer it may draw) as shown on the appropriate plate.
  • "Weight unladen" carries the same meaning as defined in the Road Traffic Act 1988 for England, Wales and Scotland, and the equivalent Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1995 for Northern Ireland.
  • The Secretary of State may make regulations extending the definition of plating certificate to include equivalent documents from other European Economic Area states or documents treated as plating certificates under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
