Vehicle identity checks: impersonation of authorised examiners

Section 43B makes it a criminal offence for a person to dishonestly pretend to be an authorised vehicle identity examiner.

• It is an offence to falsely claim to be a person authorised to carry out vehicle identity examinations under the vehicle registration regulations.
• The offence requires intent to deceive — an innocent or accidental misrepresentation would not be covered.
• The offence is tried summarily (in a magistrates' court) rather than on indictment.
• The maximum penalty on conviction is a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale (currently £1,000).
